Stress Reduction - Music is the Best Medicine Essay
Stress Reduction - Music is the Best Medicine Stress is something that I never really came across until college. In high school nothing really mattered to me, I was a very happy go lucky stress free child. I think I really took high school for granted though, I donââ¬â¢t think I took the time to sit down and think about my responsibilities and how they may affect my future. Instead I spent most of my time going out with friends after school and not coming home until late. My weekends were spent mostly drinking and sleeping. I guess I never had time for stress. I was always to busy having fun being a kid. As senior year came along I started dating my current girlfriend. She, unlike I, was very studious, had good grades, and was notâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I believe that music is something that everyone uses from time to time to relieve stress, it may not be intended for that specific use but in reality it is. I find this important to me, because what would people do without music? It is a proven way to cheer you up, and without it, I think a lot of people would be affected negatively from its absence, especially those with lots of responsibility as those in higher learning. By my use of surveys, interviews, and personal history, I will prove that college kids use music to relive stress, because it places them in a better mood while in times of heavy burden. I used a variety of research methods to further my thesis. I used methods spoke of in class in combination with my own methods, which I thought would help to make this somehow more interesting to read about. My first step was the survey, which can be seen in the first appendix. I created a survey and administered it to 10 people, most of which I knew. My survey deemed great results in favor of my thesis, but I think it could have been different if I had sat in the oak grove and gave it to random people passing thru. I asked questions that were very simple and to the point, nobody took more than a minute doing it. I started out very brief, ââ¬Å"What year are you in college?â⬠and then moved along to more complex but still very simple and intellectual questions. Comparing Beowulf And Achilles A Hero As A Hero - 829 Words
The world we live in today sure loves itââ¬â¢s heroes, donââ¬â¢t we? Superman, Batman, Spiderman, all of them are multi-million dollar franchises that have remained relevant in pop-culture for years! But one has to wonder, ââ¬Å"Why?â⬠, why are ââ¬Å"heroesâ⬠so important in the world of today, and how did they get started? Well, the second question is easy to answer, they were inspired by ancient heroes in the spirit of Beowulf and Achilles. Now, they were very similar to each other; but they had their differences too. No well written character is a hero ââ¬Å"just because they areâ⬠, they need to have a motive for their actions, and itââ¬â¢s often a personal reason. Even back when Achilles was fighting for the Greek Empire, he initially wanted little to do with theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Just so, Achilles murderously cleft the air, as Hector ran with flashing knees along the wall.â⬠Here, Achilles is described as so fast and dangerous, that Hector is as easy a kill as a pigeon to a hawk. Beowulf in stark contrast, had little of any special note. All that really set him apart was how strong he was, which to be fair, he was really strong. ââ¬Å"The monsterââ¬â¢s hatred rose higher, but his power had gone. He twisted in pain. And the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke.â⬠He decided to fight Grendel hand-to-hand since Grendel uses no weapons, and Beowulf managed to rip Grendelââ¬â¢s arm straight from his shoulder. Keep in min d that Grendel is the crazy strong demon that kills and carries away several hundred pounds of warriors daily. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter how crazy powerful you are, if you donââ¬â¢t have the courage, resolve, or better yet bravery to use your abilities, than you are no hero. A hero needs the bravery to achieve the goals they set. Achilles didnââ¬â¢t get involved initially for his own reasons. ââ¬Å"I was not there. All childishness. Though distant then, Patroclusââ¬â¢ comrade in arms was greater far than he- and it is I who had been left behind that day beside the deep-sea ships who now have made your knees give way. The City on the Hill free essay sample
The City on the Hillâ⬠written by Larry Schweikert and Allen Michael I have analyzed three specific topics/concepts that have been presented by both authors. The first topic that I observed was Christopher Columbus. Howard Zinnââ¬â¢s article was mainly focused on Columbus while Larry S. and Allen M. ââ¬â¢s article covered many explorers including Columbus. Howard Zinn more wrote his view on Columbus as a story as the other authors wrote a lot of facts and what you would call ââ¬Å"boringâ⬠information. Both of the authors included gory details of Columbusââ¬â¢s expedition which didnââ¬â¢t create the same ââ¬Å"heroicâ⬠effect that I learnt from earlier years. These two inserts also might differ because one is a Patriotââ¬â¢s History of the United States and the other is a Peopleââ¬â¢s History of the United States. My Second topic that I noticed after reading both inserts is how these early explorers changed the world in different ways. We will write a custom essay sample on The City on the Hill or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In the insert of ââ¬Å"The City on the Hillâ⬠It describes many expeditions. When Marco Polo and others traveled to China they brought back tales of wealth and unusual goods. Portugal explorers dispatched ships to Africa and brought back ivory and gold then transported and sold slaves to varies Mediterranean estates. Christopher Columbus discovered Islands in the Bahamas, Cuba, and a ââ¬Å"New Worldâ⬠. On the other hand the insert form ââ¬Å"Columbus, The Indians, and Humans Progressâ⬠talks about how Columbus explored the Islands of the Bahamas and discovered the traits of the Arawaks Indians. Columbus brought back slaves to England. Both inserts explain what these explorersââ¬â¢ intentions were and what they brought back. Overall, these articles differ because one is mainly on Columbus and the other is on all explorers. Finally my last topic is on the concept of greed. Greed came into both of these articles quite a few times. In the second paragraph of the insert ââ¬Å"Columbus, The Indians, and Human Progressâ⬠Columbus wrote about how the Arawaks would make fine servants even after these Indians greeted Columbusââ¬â¢s people with gifts and food. Gold was also a great cause for greed; Columbus forced the natives to go find gold otherwise they would get killed. Similarly in the insert ââ¬Å"The City on the Hallâ⬠explorers such as Marco Polo and Prince Henry, all brought back silks, spices, slaves and so on to their homeland. Also many explorers such as the Spanish ruined the nativesââ¬â¢ lives by killing them, making them slaves, and taking all their houses and food away. This insert shows how cruel many explores were, where as Howard Zinnââ¬â¢s only talks about the cruelty of Columbus. The overall point of view or perspective of these authors was that many explorers werenââ¬â¢t what people made them up to be. In fact in reality these explores were quite unruly when it came to territory, Fame and Money. In the insert the ââ¬Å"They City on the Hillâ⬠an example would be in 1517 the Protestant Reformation fostered a fierce and bloody competition for power and territory between Catholic and Protestant nations that reinforced national concerns. The information in a way is directly down grading these explorers which shows how the authors felt. In the insert ââ¬Å"The City on the Hillâ⬠an example of this would be when Columbus got into a fight with Indians who refused to trade as many bow and arrows as he and his men wanted so in result they ran swords through two of the natives who then bled to death. The difference between these two books show how different the nature of writing is, like from being factual to narrative. It also shows how bias some authors and how unreliable books can be. These views might also depend on what year the article was written, who the book was written to inform, and where the book was written to sell. In different places in the world the views on History are going to differ by the way you look at it.

A who was taken into a trance like state while listening to rock song that he became violent and unconsciously murdered his aunt. After hearing the negative effects of the rock music, do we as parents would just sit idly by and continue to let the youth drift with rock music that turned out to have an adverse effect on them? Parents always want the best for their children. Thereby, there are several ways to control and prevent this problem from becoming rampant in our society, especially the youth who always need guidance and advice. The first ways that you can do as a parents to prevent the problem is monitor your childrens music the same way you supervise their use of television, videos, and the Internet. Developmental psychologists and other researchers who study the effect of media on children have found that parents who are involved in all their childrens media choices have a great impact on taming its potentially destructive effects, such as encouraging aggressive behavior and reinforcing negative stereotypes about women and men. Luckily, as parents f young children, you are likely to be involved in buying the tapes or CDC, or borrowing them from the library, so music choices should be easy to monitor. But remember. The monitoring should be done on an ongoing basis. There are other ways you-can maintain control such as stay involved and listen to your childs music choices with him. If you find something objectionable, clearly explain in specifics why youre concerned so that he begins to understand that youre not just being mean and also you have valid reasons and particular values that youd like him to understand and adopt. Also, dont make the mistake of dismissing your child to hi s room to listen in private to music you dont like: The more privacy he has, the less control and awareness you have. You also must to make sure the rules apply to everyone. One way that young children are often exposed to music that may not be appropriate for their ears is through older siblings (and parents). If you dont want your 6- year-old listening to music that offends you, you probably dont want your older kids listening to it, either. Lastly, you can share your favorite selections tit your child and make an effort to appreciate his music. Encouraging your child to explore different kinds of music is likely to benefit him in many ways.In fact, our research shows that children whose parents introduce them to, and encourage them to listen to, a variety Of music do better in school. Teenagers tend to get their style of dress from musicians that they like. Singers and songwriters have always set the tone for fashion trends. The music and fashion industry have become so intertwined that recording artists are now using their fame to sell their own fashion line of clothing. The rock cushion including black nail polish, waist chains and black makeup fashions are from rock music. For example Sleeveless T-shirts Rock Band became very popular sense awesome bands like AC / DC, Metallic, Poison, Ratty, Oozy others made prototypes all the Rage. The band Nirvana brought the Grunge look to the masses in the asss. Although this look started out in the city of Seattle, USA, it quickly became a popular fad. Even now in our country, we can see that young children wearing head skin pants, leather jackets, cut rock hair style and so on, where they take advantage of clothing shows how the singer r bands that they like. Follow clothing trends favored artist directly cause teenagers tend to follow the development of the artist.Parents should better monitor and take care of what are their children wearing even where they are, especially the teenagers because this group is more likely to follow changes in fashion and always want up-to-date. Parents can control with a fashion review and selection of childrens clothes when they go out shopping. In other way, although the parents just give children pocket money for the teenagers to buy their stuffs or things that they want parents need to find out hat fashion and how clothes and the bought by their teenage children. As a conclusion, rock music seems to be the most controversial but it also has many positive influences that should be taken in to consideration. There are some negatives that come with it, and those should be filtered out by the parents. So, the next time your child wants to listen to a song they like, instead of immediately refusing, listen with both ears. You will learn much of what your child likes and dislikes. You will gain insight into the thinking of your child. You will also learn what to absolutely deny your child.
